Similarly, in trying to optimize web content for the search engines, phrasing, language and structure can become so unwieldy that the text sounds either as though it is geared towards five year olds, or that it was written by a computer with only a cursory idea of what the English language looks like.

The Mightier Pen wants to celebrate the article writers, website developers and SEO specialists who are able to create good quality writing which puts the reader at the top of the list of importance, whilst still able to ensure that the content attracts the attention of the search engines.

The Awards

The Five Star Award

The top award available is for outstanding writing. A website or article which attains this level of award is written in beautiful English which is a pleasure to read. The spelling, grammar, syntax and structure are all correct and appropriate. Punctuation, paragraphing and layout add to the clarity.

To achieve the five star award a web publisher must demonstrate that whilst search engine optimization is of great importance, ensuring that content is useful, relevant and of value to visitors, communicating information clearly and effectively is of equal importance.

The Four Star Award

The four star award represents real quality in writing, with publishers making an excellent effort to ensure that writing is clear, concise and relevant without letting search engine optimization get in the way of effective communication.

Spelling, grammar, syntax and structure are almost entirely correct and appropriate. Punctuation, paragraphing and layout are helpful.

The Three Star Award

The three star award represents a good effort in helping to make sure that optimization doesn't dominate the content of the writing. The web content is helpful and clear, with communication the priority.

Spelling and grammar are mostly correct and accurate. Punctuation and use of paragraphs demonstrate a good effort at helping to aid clarity.

We do not issue awards below three stars as this would be to recommend websites with content falling below reasonably acceptable standards.

Common Reasons Why An Award Is Not Given

Before you submit either your own website or another site, please bear in mind the following common reasons why a website may not qualify for one of our awards:

• Spelling mistakes, particularly in easy, common words demonstrating poor proof reading
• Basic grammar mistakes, especially common errors such as incomplete sentences, missing words, inconsistent use of tense or person, unclear use of pronouns
• Excessive use of keywords, including repetition of words, wording, phrasing or semantically equivalent words or phrases
• Missing, excessive or incorrect punctuation, including excessive use of exclamation marks, missing question marks at the end of questions, use of comma instead of full stop or vice versa, incorrect use of apostrophe
• Very long or very short paragraphs or sentences

Although this is not a complete list of reasons why a website or article might not be accepted for the award, it has been included to give you a quick checklist to make sure that a site may be suitable.

Please also note that we do not provide awards to websites with illegal or adult content.

If You Receive An Award

If you receive an award you will be notified by us by email. Our email to you will include the following information:

• Confirmation of whether your application has been successful or not
• Confirmation of whether you have been awarded the five star, four star or three star award
• Award graphic for your use
• Direct link to your site on our awarded page to help promote your site
• Award confirmation certificate page to advertise and confirm your achievement
• Feedback given on what you are doing well and ways in which you might be able to improve still further

You will be able to display an appropriate award graphic on your website, and link it to the following page which will explain to visitors what you have done to achieve the award:
